The United Kingdom has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, a legally binding target that requires significant decarbonisation efforts across its economy. Within this national imperative, the higher education sector holds a unique and critical position. Universities not only play a vital role in researching and developing solutions to climate change but also possess substantial operational footprints that contribute to national emissions. Addressing the environmental impact of UK Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) is therefore essential for the nation to meet its overarching climate goals.

School and university buildings account for a considerable portion, approximately 36%, of the total building emissions from the UK public sector. This statistic underscores the significant potential for HEIs to contribute to the national net-zero target by reducing their own carbon footprint. Achieving net-zero campuses involves a comprehensive strategy that addresses all sources of greenhouse gas emissions associated with an institution’s activities. This paper introduces a research framework centered on four interconnected pillars deemed crucial for UK HEIs striving to achieve net-zero campuses: behavioural change, Artificial Intelligence (AI), intelligent buildings, and SMART system integration.

Behavioural Barriers to Technology Adoption

Behavioural change initiatives are essential to foster a culture of sustainability among students and staff, influencing energy consumption patterns and promoting responsible practices. However, several behavioural barriers hinder the adoption of net-zero technologies:

  • Lack of Awareness and Understanding: Many individuals are unaware of the benefits and functionalities of new technologies.
  • Resistance to Change: People often prefer familiar routines and may resist adopting new practices.
  • Perceived Costs and Benefits: The upfront costs of new technologies can deter adoption, even if long term savings are substantial.
  • Social Norms and Peer Influence: Individuals are influenced by the behaviours and attitudes of their peers.
  • Psychological Comfort with Status Quo: Change can be perceived as risky or uncomfortable.

Is there a UK-wide policy for universities to help them with Net Zero?

The UK Department for Education (DfE) published the “Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy” in 2023. It applies to all education sectors in England, including higher education institutions. The strategy outlines actions to be taken by 2030 to support the UK’s broader Net Zero goals.

Is there an official requirement from the UK government for universities to reach Net Zero?

There are no legal requirement specifically mandating universities to reach Net Zero by a certain date. However:

  • Universities are expected to align with the UK’s national Net Zero target of 2050.
