BIM5D+: BIM-Integrated cost & carbon estimate in infrastructure

The session will run through the innovative process developed to tie in the carbon & cost estimation with the BIM model for one of the biggest rail infrastructure projects in Europe. The integrated carbon & cost calculation workflow, set up and implemented by SCS JV on the HS2 Area South Main Civil Works project, will be presented step by step. Indicative outputs, benefits and challenges faced along the way will be discussed. The main driver for re-inventing traditional practices was to effectively handle the scale of the project and the amount of associated data that required a significant increase in productivity to ensure effective and timely achievement of deliverables. The key aim of this system was to facilitate robust and consistent cost and carbon calculations by linking those to a sound set of BIM-based background quantity data in a semi-automated fashion. Our case study will demonstrate how different teams involved in project delivery have worked collaboratively across disciplines, using a single data management platform that enabled integration and ensured compatibility between different types of information.
