Digitising the Ventilation Voids of the Palace of Westminster

The Palace of Westminster is currently undergoing a £6bn restoration and renewal project. Throughout this project, there is an expectation to maximise the use of innovation and realise the benefits of BIM through construction and into the management of the asset. To inform the project, Plowman Craven has been appointed under the Palace of Westminster Term Commission to deliver a wealth of digital surveys. In 2017, we delivered the momentous survey model of the entire Palace of Westminster. Following this, the next stage was to build a model of the ventilation voids throughout the Palace to inform design. Given that the majority of these voids have never been and cannot be accessed, the model had to be built based on comprehensive research undertaken by Dr Henrik Schoenefeldt. Innovative approaches were developed enabling us to digitise and visualise this research within the model, integrating the void model into the wider building model. Coupled with this, we have strengthened its value through integrating data hosted on the Common Data Environment directly into each of the model objects. This session will provide a walk through the key points of this project, illustrating lessons learnt and processes undertaken.
