Immersive 4D - A Health & Safety Step Change?
17 Oct 2019
See how Oakwood and John Sisk & Son collaborated to deliver true, immersive 4D at the redevelopment of the Curragh Racecourse. The award winning effort (Irish Construction Awards 2019 ? BIM Initiative Winner and Irish Construction Excellence Awards 2019 ? Innovation in Construction Winner) demonstrates the success of innovative technology underpinned by the amalgamation of people, tools and management processes. The Project Team worked in a ?4D Virtual Reality' environment, enabling them to plan and sequence their works in an immersive space. Alongside the usual benefits of 4D, the bespoke tool allowed early identification of safety risks through the first person environment. The further knowledge and understanding gained of a potential risk area allowed appropriate measures to be put in place ahead of work teams commencing in the affected area, thus reducing potential safety weaknesses on-site. Stills and short videos were also incorporated into visual method statements, safety inductions and constructability reviews. Through providing this innovative facility on-site, Sisk were able to deliver an element of special awareness to the project before construction, which is why this approach has been recommended by the Considerate Constructors Scheme to their ?Best Practice Hub'. The session will focus on development, implementation, challenges and lessons learned.
