Immersive Planning - Envisaging a new town planning process
Immersive Planning is an ongoing research project about the use of immersion during the planning process to enhance the communication between its stakeholders.
During the current Town Planning process, Architects and Town Planners use two dimensional visuals (Plans, Section and Elevations) which are not readily understood by all the process stakeholders, such as members of the public or decision makers. Immersion can improve the communication of our ideas, as the public will see them with their own eyes.
We are dealing with one of the technologies that is bringing the fourth industrial revolution into fruition. History demonstrates that the successful application of new technologies demands an open mind. When the first model of a motorized vehicle was conceived, it looked like a horses’ carriage with an engine. Decades had to pass before the arrival of a real car whose design overcame its obsolete predecessor.
The prototype that we aim will mean not only the practical application of immersion during the planning process, but also a new standard for the process itself. As those pioneers of the motorized vehicle, we face an uncertain journey because, we have a clear horizon but an unknown destination.
We have just started the journey.
