Augmented Reality: Design Thinking for Impending Industry Change in AEC
17 Oct 2018
The influence and power of mobile augmented reality have been a catalyst for major industry change and it's just beginning. As our cell phones become more powerful through depth sensors and improved world tracking technology, the current limitations such as occlusion detection, will not last long whatsoever. Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) which is the process of real-time mapping of the world environment frame by frame can be dated back decades ago in robotics research. The fact that we can do this with a single phone device is foreshadowing to the future of this technology. Through utilizing the BIM model further, we can overlay it at 1:1 scale on the Construction site using the Umbra cloud platform. Previsualization of an empty space is powerful in reducing miscommunications, providing a sense of scale, and improve communication across trades. Technology is a sector where it is better to be proactive than reactive. I will discuss design thinking strategy for incorporating this into a company at scale. Through automated workflows and understanding the end user whom you are designing for, you can also leverage the power of mobile augmented reality.
