BIM deployment challenges and solutions for infrastructure projects

Currently there is no single agreed industry standard, or preferred software package - each has its strengths, but also weaknesses which make it unsuitable for most project types. There are workflows examples in the industry for one-off iconic bridge structures. These are deployed with the very latest software, custom add ins, and by top software experts. However the majority of projects are modest in scale and scope, and are arguably even more important for the day to day success of a company. The deployment process has therefore included the usual challenges of component library creation, software training and project specific support, as well as how to notes and knowledge exchange webinars, but with the added layer of complication in the variety of software used - including Revit, aecosim, tekla, civil 3D, and a multitude of addins and specialised software packages, as well as the varying levels of expertise for each. And as the software landscape shifts with new versions and features released, and entirely new packages come onto the market, these also need to be tested and evaluated, and where appropriate incorporated into the strategy, to be deployed and used until the next new thing comes onto the market
