Digital Twins - seize the opportunity today!
17 Oct 2018
Building owners suffer from fragmented information that is difficult to access and share. There is an expectation that BIM will solve this problem and it can, but there are many gaps. Every asset put in place is represented on a model. But the assets aren't classified the way they will be managed. Also, asset information must be aggregated from different sources at different points in the project lifecycle. But BIM, if defined just as a model from a design tool, is not the best repository. Also, documents remain disconnected from model elements, as files in folders. The process, tools and skills to resolve these gaps is daunting for most. Enter the "Digital Twin". Using the BIM model as a "seed" an Asset Information Model is built through a systematic implementation of a defined set of processes, supported by a digital platform for information management. By linking the Asset Information Model with operational systems, the Digital Twin comes alive as a virtual "as maintained" representation of the building. This session will present real case studies of new projects that are getting a Digital Twin as a natural outcome of construction, saving significant cost and pain to get facility operations ready.
