Industry research demonstrates that over 80% of major projects incur overruns with incomplete or inaccurate information being a key contributor, especially in the early stages. This leads to delayed decisions and costly mistakes. (PwC 2013) With the UK government spending £BNs on the road network covering the Smart Motorways, Complex Infrastructure and Regional Infrastructure Programmes, Highways England decided they required a secure and centralised system to improve information flow and collaboration across the supply chain, drive project mobilisation and control costs. In keeping with the government’s BIM Level 2 mandate across public funded projects, Highways England is using a Common Data Environment (CDE) to coordinate and accelerate the sharing and capture of design, construction and operational based information. The CDE delivers a common approach to information management, using BIM standards and processes to manage the delivery and verification of project information from their supply chain, reducing the risk of delays. The CDE ensures Highways England is involved from the earliest stage, helping to improve the delivery of projects, by establishing standards, consistency and reliability in the information across the asset lifecycle.
