Improving Construction Quality using Computer Vision and AR
17 Oct 2018
Much has been spoken about utilising AR technology together with BIM to improve the construction process however while there have been a handful of worthy attempts at prototyping, the commercial application of the technology to the workplace is extremely limited. Whilst the potential for innovation can be seen by the technology vendors, their approach is understandably general and in not meaningfully construction specific. Likewise, where the tech is being trialled by contractors, the approach tends to be a corporate, top-down push of the technology. This does not play well in an industry that is great at getting the job done, but generally in the same way that it has always done it before. This session will consider how to harness the potential of deep learning, computer vision and AR on the job site, using practical examples. We will demonstrate why it is important to take a bottom-up approach in the development of such innovate new technology. We will discuss what this means for designing the tech so that users want to engage with it, and how we are creating the cultural shift so that project personnel are asking âwhen can we get itâ rather than groaning âoh not another company initiativeâ.
