The changing shape of the UK construction industry is demanding better performing and more innovative businesses to make sure they are fit for the future. The industry has long suffered from low margins, with pre-tax profits now under ever-increasing pressure and during a time of unprecedented uncertainty. The construction industry is gearing up to meet these challenges and there is a clear need for more collaborative supply chains, improved cost controls, enhanced operational efficiencies and the building of business resilience. The implementation of digital technologies can help to address many of the challenges that the construction industry faces and, whilst it is true that the intensely paper-based industry has made some exciting developments in recent years, there is still enormous scope for further paper to data transformation. Using digital technologies to drive smarter, more efficient ways of working at scale, across complex supply chains, must be a high priority for leadership teams. The potential gains are extremely hard to ignore; a recent PwC survey estimated that construction businesses could save 3.4% in costs and increase annual revenues by 2.9% over the next three years by implementing a better digital strategy.
