DCW 2018

THE SKILLS HUB

In 2018 we will be introducing a brand-new area and workshop space in partnership with CITB called the Skills Hub which will explore the future of skills in the built environment and the ways in which we can encourage new entrants into the industry.

The impact of innovation and technology in the built environment goes well beyond a specific product or process.  It holds the key to transforming and changing the face of our industry.  Representing a huge opportunity for the built environment and opening it up to a much broader and diverse pool of talent and skills.  Making the industry more appealing to new entrants that can help support and boost our workforce.

It also presents a challenge for the way we attract, train and upskill industry talent to make sure we retain and develop our expertise and that the UK stays at the forefront of the built environment.

The Skills Hub will feature seminars, workshops and speed networking sessions connecting industry with educators and influencers.  The CITB team will be available on the Skills Hub throughout the event to share latest insights, information on funding and how we can support your skills needs, so come and visit us.

'The age of digital is upon us; it is part of everyday life and is reforming industries across the globe. As our built environment shifts away from Victorian processes, we need to challenge preconceived ideas, set a compelling vision for our industry and build pathways towards a sector where digital and physical interact.'

The 'Skills Gap' is a topic that has been long discussed in the built environment.  The changing face of our industry as we shift towards new ways of working and embrace technology is creating other challenges for industry who need to understand what the skills gap actually means for the future.

This session will discuss the opportunities for the built environment to change the way we work, what this will means for the future of skills in our industry, and how it can help create a more sustainable, efficient and profitable industry.

The construction industry historically has a poor record of achieving gender parity in its workforce. Globally, there is a considerable shortage of the professionals needed to fulfill the demand of growing populations by constructing the buildings and infrastructures we live and work in. This skills shortage could be fulfilled by women, who remain one of the most underutilised business resources. The shortage of women in the construction industry has been investigated extensively by academics and industry practitioners; however, despite this comprehensive research, and the acknowledgment and increased awareness of the issues faced by women in the industry, little has changed over the last few decades. Given the business case for making changes that would increase economic growth and productivity, this session will give an overview of the research conducted by the University of Cambridge. The session will present the barriers to entry for women found in the sector as well as the best practices identified in the industry. Best practice was found in a London based construction company where gender parity has been achieved in an extraordinarily short length of time. Ultimately the session will put forward a practical framework for companies willing to gain benefit from a gender-balanced workforce.

Professional Institutions tend to reflect the industry roles of the early nineteenth century when they were established: Builder, Architect, Engineer. It is not enough to hold one of these roles: the modern construction professional must be multidimensional; engaged, diverse, adaptive, always learning. A Portfolio Professional. dotBuiltEnvironment is an informal group of built environment agitators made up of such Portfolio Professionals. Drawn from across the professional spectrum, these individuals found common ground in their hybrid skillsets and their wish to work together to develop these abilities. As part of an ongoing, open-sourced research project, the group has developed SkillsRadar: a multifaceted measurement tool that allows participants to demonstrate their varied qualifications and skills graphically. The tool builds on previous industry debates regarding 'T-Shaped professionals' and 'Specialists vs Generalists'. Join us and find out what your future career progression looks like in smarter more digitally enabled built environment without silos and without traditional barriers blocking your way.
