Dr Paul Shepherd is Senior Lecturer in Digital Architectonics at the University of Bath, having previously gained significant experience in practice, running a team to develop bespoke modelling and analysis software for BuroHappold. He is also a Deputy Director of the Institute of Mathematical Innovation at the University of Bath (bath.ac.uk/imi) and a member of the IStructE Panel on Digital Workflows & Computational Design.
Paul’s early research focused on the development of novel approaches to the optimization of complex geometry buildings. In more recent years his focus has expanded from using computers to optimise the shape of the building itself, to including the layout of its structural members (build-opt.org) and the methods of construction (aerial-abm.com). The ACORN project discussed in this presentation therefore forms a natural progression, from transforming the computational design of buildings, to their computational manufacture. Paul is principal investigator on the project, and leads on tackling the “digital” objectives.
