Digital Construction Week continues to be a powerful platform for exchanging ideas on how construction can modernise through technology. One standout session this year, Fast-Tracking Digital Transformation: Lessons from Domis’ 10-Project Rollout, featured Katherine Bromwell, Business Improvement Manager at Domis Construction, and Lukas Olbrich, Co-Founder & CEO of Sablono. Together, they shared practical insights from Domis’ journey digitising processes across multiple live projects.

This article explores three of the core strategies discussed in their session – strategies that can help project leaders implement technology in a scalable, sustainable way without disrupting delivery on site.

Lesson 1: Embed a culture of continuous improvement

Digital transformation is not just a matter of selecting the right tools; it’s about cultivating the right mindset. As highlighted by Bromwell and Olbrich, success depends on leaders promoting a culture of learning and evolution. Rather than expecting perfection from day one, teams need to be open to iteration and feedback.

In Domis’ case, this meant creating space to test, adapt, and refine processes in real time, while encouraging teams to approach change with curiosity rather than resistance. This mindset shift made adoption smoother and helped deliver long-term improvements across multiple projects.

Lesson 2: Make change manageable – “Don’t boil the ocean”

A recurring point in the session was the importance of starting small. When digital tools are introduced, the instinct might be to roll out across all projects or digitise every process at once. But that approach can quickly become overwhelming.

Instead, Domis decided to trial Sablono’s digital platform on one project for three months. This allowed the team to focus, learn quickly, and build confidence in the new system. Only once the pilot proved successful (which turned out to be just three weeks later), did they scale gradually across additional projects and workflows.

This incremental approach ensured that digital transformation remained controlled and purposeful, avoiding disruption while still delivering impact.

Lesson 3: Create continuity across projects

One of the key challenges in scaling digital processes is consistency. Without a dedicated person or function overseeing implementation, each project may interpret or use tools differently, leading to fragmentation and inefficiency.

To address this, Domis put in place an internal team that could act as a central point of coordination. Leading the Business Improvement team, Katherine and her team helped align teams, standardise usage across projects, and make sure that successful approaches were shared, not siloed.

As Bromwell explained, this continuity is essential when rolling out new systems at scale – especially when working across a fast-moving pipeline of live projects.

Conclusion: Practicality over perfection

The Domis case study shared during Digital Construction Week is a valuable reminder that digital transformation doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective. With the right mindset, a manageable rollout strategy, and internal alignment, even large-scale change can feel achievable.

For organisations looking to fast-track their own transformation, these lessons offer a clear and realistic starting point.
