What is the Construction Innovation Hub?
Launched in November 2018, with £72 million from UK Research and Innovation’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, the Construction Innovation Hub brings together world-class expertise from the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), BRE (Building Research Establishment) and the Centre for Digital Built Britain (CDBB).
The Hub works in close partnership with the Active Building Centre (ABC) and Network Plus, as part the wider Transforming Construction Challenge.
What is the Platform Design Open Call?
The Open Call has been designed to engage and encourage businesses and stakeholders, both from within and outside the construction industry, to get involved in the largest ever Government-backed R&D programme in the sector.
Successful applicants to the Open Call will get detailed support from manufacturing, performance and digital experts from across the three centres of the Hub to develop and refine their products, technologies or services.
Working with successful participants, the Hub will identify and co-develop a platform solution that can be designed, manufactured and installed on a structural carrier frame which can be used across multiple building types. The platform solution will combine digital, design and manufacturing principles, delivering a high degree of rationalisation and integration.
The Hub will install and widely showcase the selected and developed solutions in a proof of concept building. This will demonstrate how the platform principles of a set of components can be applied across a wide range of UK government projects for vital new buildings like schools, hospitals and prisons.

The Construction Innovation Hub at Digital Construction Week 2019
This year’s Digital Construction Week will feature a brand new and exclusive theatre delivered in partnership with the Construction Innovation Hub. Visitors can look forward to two days of free seminars and workshops, which will explore how we can change the way buildings and infrastructure are designed, manufactured, integrated and connected within our built environment.
