Seeing beneath the surface: Using integrated ground models to understand ground conditions and mitigate risk at Sizewell C

Nuclear new build projects are among the most complex, tightly regulated, and risk-sensitive infrastructure programmes in the world – and understanding the ground is fundamental to getting them right.

This session presents how AtkinsRéalis, engaged as a designer by Sizewell C, developed and applied an integrated digital ground engineering workflow, to manage geological uncertainty, risk and support informed design decision-making. Central to this approach was the creation of a single source of truth ground investigation database and an integrated ground model, facilitated through Seequent’s software and expertise. The database was subsequently handed over to Sizewell C to support ongoing project delivery.

Through real project examples, we will demonstrate how bringing all subsurface insight into a single digital ecosystem is reducing rework, accelerating decisions, and enabling safer, more predictable outcomes for one of the UK’s most significant energy projects.
