Luke Johnstone is a senior engineering geologist at AtkinsRéalis where he leads the ground modelling and 3D visualisation technical networks. Luke has eight years of experience in engineering geology and digital ground engineering across New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom. He has worked across asset maintenance, major infrastructure, transport and energy projects, including Sizewell C and Australian motorway, tunnel and pumped hydro developments.

Luke specialises in digital ground engineering, particularly 3D ground modelling, site characterisation, and geohazard and risk assessment. His work focuses on the digital synthesis of geotechnical data to support engineering geological judgement, develop robust ground models, and improve understanding of the subsurface. He is particularly interested in how integrated ground models and digital tools can improve visualisation, communication and interpretation of geological and geotechnical information, reducing uncertainty and risk and supporting informed design and decision-making.

Luke is the chair of the Engineering Group of the Geological Society Early Careers Committee and a member of the Digital Transformation of Ground Data Group.
