What if your BIM model could say no? Automating compliance with data and AI

Compliance remains one of the biggest sources of risk, rework, and late design change in construction largely because it is still treated as a final check rather than a design input. But what if compliance could be embedded directly into the model, using open, interoperable data that works across disciplines and platforms?

This session explores how OpenBIM principles, structured information models, and AI-enabled rule checking are enabling a shift towards “compliant-by-design” workflows. Drawing on real UK practice, the talk demonstrates how building regulations, fire and life-safety requirements, accessibility, and carbon performance can be tested iteratively within digital design environments rather than retrospectively at gateways or handover.

Attendees will see practical examples of AI-driven model interrogation, automated rule checking, and performance simulation operating across OpenBIM environments, helping teams identify issues earlier, improve consistency, and strengthen accountability without constraining design quality or creativity.
